MICROBIOLOGY NEWWTA #0108-MA
Target Audience: WWT Description: This course has been designed to provide entry-level microbiology material and introduce the types of microorganisms such as bacteria, protozoa and metazoan. Discussion will include environmental factors that affect their growth and reproduction, explanation of aerobic, anaerobic, nitrification, bacterial growth and respiration, and microscopic examination including selection and use of microscope and procedures for sample examination. Extensive hands-on identification of organisms found in activated sludge will be included, along with a discussion of microscopic examination as a process control tool. Students should bring a small sample of mixed liquor from the effluent end of the aeration tank. The sample needs to be chilled if it is stored more than a few hours to preserve the microorganisms. Sample is not a requirement of the course. Cost: This course is being offered in conjunction with MWPCA; special rate of $50 for MWPCA members. $95 for non members |

STAINING & IDENTIFICATION NEWWTA #0208-MA
Target Audience: Description: Prerequisite: Wastewater Microbiology course or extensive experience with microscopic examination of wastewater samples. A review of microscopic examination of wastewater and types of microscopes and their use will be covered. A discussion of the currently available filament identification textbooks will be included. An introduction to staining filaments with hands-on staining and examination of filaments for identification will be given. A detailed analysis of filament identification will be presented. The relevance of filament species to process control and troubleshooting will be discussed as well. Students should bring a small sample of mixed liquor from the effluent end of the aeration tank. The sample needs no special care to preserve filaments. Sample is not a requirement of the course. Staining is messy and permanent, dress accordingly!
